Spring 2024 #10/10: Last Week of Spring. Summer CSA & Hours Start June 4th!

So green! So gorg! The Spinach is looking lush and luscious as we celebrate the final week of Spring at Wild Hare.  As we transition out of “the off season,” I’m sending up a huge message of thanks to you, our partners in growing– CSA members, customers, and crew for setting the farm up for the main event of Summer and for eating in season through Spring, Winter and Fall.  Your support makes all the difference, and your visits to the farm, whether picking up a farm share, stopping by the farm stand to shop a little or bringing friends and family by for a short field walk–you’re  the reason why we’re still here, ten Springs later, taking notes and with our eyes and intentions looking forward to the seasons and years ahead. Thank you for that gift. Summer has already been set into motion—the cukes, the zukes, the tomatoes, the FLOWERS…they’re all in the ground thanks to the Wild Hare Crew. We haven’t even turned the calendar to June, but Mark is already working on crops that we won’t harvest until next January.  This early dose of “Juneuary” weather is really getting to him, so we’re going to lean in to the cool and potentially rainy days ahead of us and enjoy “one last hurrah from the root cellar,” along with our Spring Garlic and a bit of Asparagus from Eastern Washington.

With Gratitude… here’s to Summer!
Katie & Mark

Spring 2024 #9/10: Planting! Cucumber & Zucchini Starts (and a few Tomatoes left too)

There’s just so much planting happening. Planting, planting, planting! And thanks to the return of our resident crow, who can yank up an entire bed of Kale or Broccoli in under thirty minutes, we’re doing quite a bit of re-planting. (I’ve named him Russell, and I am NOT entertained!) It has become a perennial problem—the crows aren’t going for the greens themselves. They’re searching for tiny little wireworms that are problems in and of themselves. It is a real Catch-22! Mark is attempting to pace his frustrations out seeding Parsnips tonight ahead of a potentially rainy Tuesday, stomping his way down the rows with a walk-behind seeder, hoping his presence deters the birds and that he feels better afterward. It is like the farmer’s equivalent of “rage cleaning.”

Spring 2024 #8/10: Spring Onions, Asparagus & Making Way for Summer

Over a thousand tomato plants are now in the ground, putting out serious roots at Wild Hare, along with Zucchini, Summer Squash and more rotations of leafy greens. Peppers and Cucumbers are going in this week too, which means that this week’s harvest, like last week, is greatly determined by our need to make space in the greenhouses. Little lettuce heads, Spinach and Red Russian Kale are on this week’s docket, along with Organic Asparagus from Eastern Washington. Also, I hope you’re ready to geek out on Onions with me for a paragraph or two, because after years of light spousal bickering and serious strategizing, we’ve got a glorious stand of Red Spring Onions to show for it…and they’re GOOD.
