Happy New Year!
I hope this note finds you well.  We reported back for our first full on, collective day of work for the year today after taking a hard-earned break to slow down a little and catch our breath.  There was still a bit of work to be done over the break--the crew had to reinforce some of the fences to protect our younger flocks of chickens from our less than neighborly Coyotes, and one very intrigued Chicken Hawk, who are growing increasingly desperate.  No major losses--it paid to be proactive this go-round.  Mark spent most of the overnight hours clearing snowloads from greenhouses on Christmas Eve, and the next morning, Hazel enjoyed the gift of the first White Christmas she could recall.  She's as sentimental as they come.  Mark noted that there were Coyote tracks right behind his along the paths between greenhouses. As for me, I enjoyed seeing the fields covered in snow, because it was about as close to the tabula rasa effect that I've ever experienced on this ever-growing, ever-working year-round farm.  There was something liberating about seeing the fields all tucked in for a short period.  It made the idea of beginning anew seem not only imminent but strangely inspiring.  So from there, I resolved to hit my cookbooks and seed catalogs side-by-side and hope that the Spring doesn't take too long to get here.

An adage of our modern time suggests that that we have to disconnect in order to reconnect, and I'll admit, a few weeks spent moving, diving into books, playing with our family, logging off of social media and ignoring the dreaded email inbox, handling only the essentials and incidentals was probably the best thing we could have done for the farm (and of course, ourselves).   I'm looking forward to re-connecting with you all as we start another year growing here for you all.

Best,
Katie
