Summer #17/18: Two Weeks of Summer Harvest to Go!
Today is the Autumnal Equinox, but we’ve got TWO more weeks of the Summer Season at Wild Hare before we make our switch to Fall on October 6th.
The seasons sort of bleed into one another this time of year, mapping awkwardly onto dates that we picked a year ago, not really knowing whether the Summer stuff will drop off abruptly or if the Fall stuff will mature a little bit ahead of schedule. This year, I feel fortunate that Summer is tapering off gently and that I haven’t had to enjoy my last fresh Tomato or Melon just yet. But, hold onto your ladles and roasting pans. Autumn’s abundance is arriving already!
There are telltale signs—the burgeoning array of heirloom apples, the thin layer of fog over the field, and the dew that soaks us up to our knees on an otherwise dry morning. The crew started the day in rain bibs and ended the day in short sleeves and sun hats in the Tomato field. To one side of the truckload of those photogenic farmers up there is the last of our Sweet Corn, which there are just enough ears of for our CSA to enjoy this week. We almost made it to the end of September before the birds found it. The whole scarecrow/harvest decor motif doesn’t exactly exist in a vacuum. Meanwhile, the beds to the other side are packed full of this week’s Tokyo Turnips, several beds of Broccoli, the first heads of which are just starting to pop, and a whole lot of Root Vegetables that we’ll be eating and storing up this Fall. From the drivers seat, you’d be able to see beds of Delicata, Kuri, Kabocha, Butternut, and Acorn Squashes that we’ve been field curing. We’ve got a lot of bins to pack and stack before the week is out!
Thanks,
Katie
