Last week, I had a couple of folks ask me what the story was with the big white things billowing in the field, so I figured it was worth sharing a bit about floating row cover. You’ve might have seen it as you drive along River Rd and wondered for yourself. Also known as Reemay, these blankets are a thin, porous, breathable poly fabric that serves many purposes on our farm. We lay it over beds to protect vulnerable plants from frost in the cold months, but we also use it as a physical barrier to deter certain pests throughout the year. If not for this row cover, the Bok Choy we’re eating this week would have been munched on by Flea Beetles first. So, as long as we have a big roll of it at our disposal, and as long as we’re not feeling too worn out at the end of a big planting push, we tuck the plants in to help them grow.
This is the last week of Spring Share at Wild Hare. As we say goodbye to the “off seasons,” and head into Summer next week, I want to say a big THANKS to all of you who keep this farm growing year-round. To the members of our crew, who manage to band together and make vegetables happen in all sorts of weather, and to customers and CSA members like you who commit to eating seasonally throughout the year, we are beyond grateful for the support, strength and sense of community that you make possible. Your visits to the farm and the kind words you share about Wild Hare (both with us and with others) mean more than I can say with words. So, we’re going to do our best to say it with fruits and vegetables…and with flowers in a few weeks too! As a quick reminder, the Summer CSA season begins NEXT WEEK on June 3rd, and starting on June 7th, the farmstand will be also open on Saturdays from 9-2 for shopping and CSA Pickups. If you’ve been picking up on Tuesdays or Wednesdays this Spring but would prefer to switch to Saturday pickups over the Summer, please send me a quick reply or let us know at the farmstand no later than June 2nd.
Many Thanks,
Katie & Mark
